Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS A ROOF CURB?

A raised frame to provide a surface for mounting mechanical units, skylights, etc on a roof.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CURB MOUNTED SKYLIGHT AND A SELF-FLASHING SKYLIGHT?

A curb-mounted skylight is designed to mount on top of an existing flashed roof curb. Consider the skylight curb to be like a shoebox and the curb-mounted skylight is the shoebox lid.  When ordering a curb-mounted skylight, the measurements that we need are the outside curb dimension. View the Curb Mount Skylight Worksheet.
A self-flashing skylight is a skylight that comes with a built in roof curb. The curb is a 4” tall aluminum extrusion that is integrated with the skylight frame. When ordering a self-flashing skylight, the measurements that we need are the inside curb dimension.  View the Self-Flashing Skylight Worksheet.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WHAT ARE THE OUTSIDE CURB DIMENSIONS?

The outside curb dimensions are measured to the outside edge of the roof curb as described above. These dimensions are the exact outer-most edges of a pre-existing roof curb, do not add any clearance, we will automatically include an industry standard clearance.

WHAT IS CONDENSATION?

Condensation is not a skylight defect; it’s a result of atmospheric conditions inside and outside of the building.  Condensation is a result of warm moist air coming in contact with a cooler surface. Double Dome Skylights are subject to the normal formation of condensation between the domes. Glass Skylights are subject to the normal formation of condensation on the interior of the building.  Please contact AiA for more information.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WHAT IS GLAZING DISTORTION?

All Glazing (transparent material on skylights) will have inherent minor distortion especially when viewed at an angle.  For example; Acrylic or Polycarbonate domes will have distortion due to the curvature of the dome, waves, small bumps, or other imperfections created during the manufacturing process that may be noticeable when looking at an object other than the blue sky.  Tempered glass typically has the least distortion but can have waves that are inherent in the tempering process.  Please contact AiA for more information.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ARE THERE ANY REQUIRED INSPECTIONS & MAINTENANCE?

Skylights and Translucent Wall Systems should be inspected yearly and will require maintenance approximately every 1 to 5 years.  Local conditions will dictate this frequency and sometime will require more frequent maintenance.  Examples of the accelerated conditions are; dirt and/or insects clogging weep systems, exposure to corrosive environments, extreme weather, etc.  Maintenance typically involves cleaning, scraping loose caulking, re-caulking, clearing weep holes, etc. Please contact AiA for more information.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WHAT IS EXPANSION AND CONTRACTION?

AiA Skylights are designed to structurally account for expansion and contraction.  Occasionally there may be audible popping noises especially with acrylic domes.  Please contact AiA for more information.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WHAT ARE THE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS?

AiA Skylights are not designed to support people.  Proper safety equipment should be used around skylights for personal safety.  Please contact AiA for more information.

WHAT IS A BREATHER TUBE (CAPILLARY TUBE)?

A breather tube is a small hollow tube found in insulated glass units. The function of a breather tube is to allow air pressure to stabilize during transportation of skylights and windows. Because these tubes are hollow they must be crimped (closed) after or just before installation to keep moisture from forming between the panes of glass. If these breather tubes are not closed properly it will void the glass manufacturer’s warranty. Please click here to see the suggested way of closing these tubes.
